jbe,

Certainly my high-school Latin was of immense help with learning English vocabulary,

I maintain that the study of Latin (or Greek, whose grammatical structure is quite similar to Latin's)is equally or even more important toward an understanding of English grammar. (I have presented this opinion before, so I'm sorry for the repetition.) I've often thought that students dissect Latin sentences and grammatical structures as a Biology student dissects a specimen. These exercises are great learning experiences for English Grammar, in my opinion.
