Keith, As I see it the buyers listen to their friends and if the friend is Apple, they can be steered that way. Word of mouth is the best advertisement, however APple lacks mouths, and on a statistical basis most will have Wintel friends and will buy Wintel. Those in corporation will also adhere to the standard in place, ask their tech people and just buy more of the same.
Apple strongholds tend to stay that way, but suffer some erosion based on price. Same for Wintels.

When a platform is abandoned then people take a broad look and set upon a new standard. That is why Apple cannot terminate any platform now. Too many would jump ship.

If a person starts afresh and simply does a software availability, hardware price etc survey thay are bound to pick Wintel 95/100 times based on avaiability, stores, share etc.
If the graphoc dept say buy quark and a machine to run it= Apple.
