"The Bear Book" by Rothschild was just published this year.
In it, he discusses history as well as strategies to deal with the
bear.

One strategy is to invest in countries that don't correlate with
US markets. He cites studies that suggests India, South Korea,
Japan, Italy.

Some Closed End Funds that trade at near NAV or at
discounts and represent these regions:

Fidelity Advisor Korea Fund $5, @NAV
India Fund $8 1/2, 16% discount to NAV
Smith Barney Italy Fund $16 1/8, 15% discount to NAV
Morg Stanley Asian Pacific Fund $7 1/2, 19% discount to NAV
Emerg Markets Infrastructure Fund $11 7/8, 22% discount to NAV
Emerg Markets Telecomm Fund $14 3/4, 20% discount to NAV
Morgan Staneley India Fund $9 1/4, 13% discount to NAV
India Growth Fund $10 3/16, 15% discount to NAV

These countries, except for Italy, all have depressed stock markets
that may represent value in themselves. So you may be able
to buy value at a discount.

Good Investing,
Mike
