Cody - Re:" S&P lost
over 55% of its value in only 18 months (May 73 thru October 74).

For reference, Intel was at $78 on January 10, 1974 (NOT CORRECTED FOR ALL THE SPLITS SINCE THEN).

In December, 1974, Intel had plummeted to $15.50 (NOT CORRECTED FOR ALL THE SPLITS SINCE THEN).

Bear in mind, this particular "drop" in the market was caused by the Arab oil embargo, a heretofore economic factor that had no historic equivalent (to my knowledge).

I'm not aware of what stocks did well during this time (perhaps the oil and gas companies did well, as well as oil exploration companies).

Gold went way up, as did silver. But nearly ALL other stocks plummeted in value.

In cases like this, very few stocks would be a good investment. But these cataclysmic events are hard to predict in advance.
