From what I've gathered over the last two years, only the PERIPHERY of the flap heals completely back onto the cornea, while the underlying central tissue doesn't completely heal onto the underside of the flap.
Of course, PRK doesn't have this problem.
That's what an individual at Visx told me. However, I hope it's incorrect.
There's also the occasional problem of the epithelium healing into the incision, and induced irregular astigmatism, which is difficult, if not impossible to correct. Again, PRK doesn't have this problem.
The 6-month results are in for that ongoing LASIK/MPMZ PRK study for extreme myopes -6 to -22, and the findings are that MPMZ PRK and LASIK give same results, although MPMZ PRK has minor transient clinical haze 10% of time, and LASIK induces irregular astigmatism 3% of time. Saw that on PBS "Beyond Glasses and Contacts" April 12.
