Small natural gas price hike in works

Canadian Western Natural Gas Co. Ltd. customers are being hit with a small hike in natural gas rates this winter, but will see lower summer rates next year.

The Alberta Energy and Utility Board has approved a winter cost (from Nov. 1 to March 31) of $1.374 per gigajoule of gas, up 6.6 cents from last year, the company said Friday.

From April 1 to Oct. 31, 1997, the cost of gas from Canadian Western will be $1.274, 1.8 cents lower than last summer.

A typical Calgary customer consuming 150 gigajoules can expect to pay $608 for natural gas service in 1997, compared to $605 in 1996 and $628 in 1995, the company said.

Actual costs will depend on weather, individual gas consumption and municipal franchise fees.
