And a word found frequently in crossword puzzles. Time was, it was commonly known as the rarest disease in the world. It is also called laughing disease, seriously! People who contracted it laughed themselves to death.

Clinically, kuru is characterized primarily by a spongiform encephalopathy. It is closely related to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, more recently known as mad cow disease.
