Graystone,

Kuru and CJD are viral in origin and would be contracted
by various means of viral transmission.

CJD is named for Hans Gerhard Creutzfeldt, German psychiatrist (1885-1964) and Alfons Maria Jakob, German psychiatrist (1884-1931), the scientists who isolated and identified the specific disease pattern. BTW, that's how most eponymous diseases are named.

To learn more than you probably ever want to know about diseases, their origins, their treatments, etc., I would recommend the online or print edition of "The Merck Manual." There is also an edition intended for laymen, but I am not familiar with it.
