How about the following:

short currentyear, birthyear, age;
currentyear = 2000;
birthyear = 1950;

age = currentyear - birthyear;

The resulting age = 50

Programmers aren't as stupid as you make them out to be Mr. Mitchell, and the world doesn't run on 30 year old mainframes with ancient Cobol code. I promise you that the Social Security checks will keep coming in January, 2000.
