John, also in today's NYTimes an excellent article on Java momentum. The enthusiasm for java and the virtue of it in embedded systems is presented in a very well balanced perspective with respect to Microsoft and the desktop: nytimes.com <<Clearly visible at this year's Java One exhibition, besides the numbers and the enthusiasm, were indications that the success or failure of Java really has very little to do with the desktop computing world that Microsoft dominates with both its operating systems and its applications. The technological forces now moving in Java's favor instead revolve more closely around the idea of "distributed computing" -- the ability to break up software tasks so they can run on many different computers on a network. Significantly, this is the same impetus that gave rise to the overnight explosion of the Internet. (snip) Microsoft executives argue that sluggish Java performance on the personal computer will outweigh the importance of PC's being able to interact with everything from consumer gadgets to giant servers.
