64M DRAM in production from Toshiba/IBM joint venture. The chip design is based on 256M DRAM technology, so it can be scaled from .35 to .15 micron with only "incremental investments" in re-design and manufacturing technologies.......

announced it has placed 64-Mbit DRAMs into production in its
joint-venture wafer fab here with partner IBM Corp.

The venture, called Dominion Semiconductor, is now using a 0.35-micron
process technology to produce 64-Mbit memories with extended data out
(EDO) features for high speed and low power consumption, according to
Toshiba.>>

<<Toshiba said the Dominion joint venture is slated to begin production of a
64-Mbit synchronous DRAM based on 0.25-micron technology in the next
several months.
The design is aimed at emerging high-speed requirements in
PC systems--a market segment that many DRAM suppliers hope will remain
profitable.

Toshiba is banking on a trench memory cell design that was jointly
developed with IBM Microelectronics. The design was initially developed
for the 256-Mbit DRAM generation, but Toshiba is applying it to 64-Mbit
chips. By doing so, Toshiba believes the 64-Mbit will be easily scaled from
0.35-micron to 0.15-micron feature sizes with incremental investments in
both re-design and manufacturing technologies.


"This 'seamless scalability' requires minimal customer requalification at finer
geometries which lowers the risk of failure and offers our customers
