She noted that 1997 had been an exceptionally strong year. Diluted earnings per share rose to $2.52 from $1.70, and some of Schlumberger's customers had already indicated they would moderate their spending growth in 1998. Asked about market rumors that Schlumberger was considering a bid for rival company Baker Hughes Inc , she replied that the company never commented on rumors.
