Chaz --

TE told the shareholders that TI chips are in 50% of cellular phones. It's not a rumor.

For example, you'll find a DSP Solution behind one of the hottest-selling devices in the world today- the digital cellular phone. Not too many people realize it, but digital cellular phones actually outshipped PCs for the first time in 1997. All told, the industry produced 86 million units of digital cellular phones in 1997, and we forecast that to be about 125 million this year.

I suspect I don't have to tell anybody why digital cell phones are so popular. But you may not realize how pervasive and how fast growing digital wireless technology is becoming on a broad scale. Not just here in the U.S., but in countries around the world, where digital wireless is growing faster than any previous generation of communications technology.

It took over 70 years for traditional telephones to reach 50 million subscribers worldwide. Analog cellular phones hit that same benchmark in just 14 years. But digital cellular phones blow them both away: It grew to 50 million subscribers in 5 years - and there's still no end in sight.

TIers can take a lot of pride in that statistic, because today more than half of all digital cell phones produced are based on a TI DSP Solution. We literally invented the single-chip DSP engine that makes today's best cell phones possible. Our technology is the reason why these phones are smaller, lighter, and offer more talk time than ever before.>>>>
