Mark, coming from a remediation sector, actually Operating Systems. I can tell you that the problem is REAL. But OS's won't be the area that causes the problems...We've been on top of those and there really are but a few fews of OS's to worry about. Though even today you might find some major Co's who haven't rolled out the Y2K compliant versions to all it's customers' or more likely customers' yet to have upgraded where you would still see problems with your simple test.
Applications and embedded systems share the bulk of the risk, and testing is far from simple....Just running at the crossover date with faked data and forward looking reports will show up Many problems, but there are so many interactions to consider, proper testing will be very difficult complete in time. Thus Customers must be very critical of the quality of the team doing their renovations!
