Pat, what I know is that LSI is using the leading edge G-11 fabrication for the CDMA chip. It will be highly integrated and have low power consumption, unlike the early Amati chip which was done with an earlier generation technology. Here is a relevant section: lsilogic.com
<<LSI Logic's CDMA baseband processor architecture is the most highly integrated CDMA processing solution available today. Thanks in large part to the company's leading-edge G11T CMOS process technology, which features 0.18-micron (Leff) line widths...(snip)
LSI Logic's CDMA baseband processor architecture integrates voice coding-including mixed-signal analog and digital capabilities-with a seamless interface to baseband modem, speaker, microphone and IF/RF devices. The architecture includes an on-chip ARM7TDMI control processor with on-chip RAM, dual voice and modem assistance OakDSPCorer digital signal processors (DSPs), DSP program RAM/ROM, data RAM, digital logic for most modem functions, accelerators and glue logic. Lower Power Consumption. The on-chip digital circuitry of LSI Logic's CDMA architecture operates at only 1.8 volts, ultimately providing significantly reduced power consumption levels. Working in conjunction with on-chip 3.3-volt mixed-signal circuitry (which includes a phase-locked loop, voice codec, and auxiliary ADC and DAC units), the architecture's digital 1.8-volt operation and sophisticated power management capabilities pave the way for battery life increases of up to 60% when the system is in standby mode, with similar improvements to be realized when in the talk mode.>>
I own TI but LSI is doing great things too and is big into networking and systems-on-a-chip. Cisco's gigabyte routers, for example, are made by LSI. Shane Forbes who is a regular on the LSI thread, and a very great source of information and analysis did a piece on LSI for SI's "Financial Connection". It's a must read. Shane is also a nice guy. exchange2000.com
All the best, Michael
P.S. LSI's price point, IMHO, is very good at this time and John Dessaurer has LSI as a buy. |
