Yes the dinosaur's tail was almost bit off before he knew his old 'big iron' had stopped selling and that the small systems were eating him alive and then microchannel failed. Yes IBM was in trouble. It was so big that is had the financial mass to save itself. Same with Apple. It lost billions and stiff had lots of cash from bygone days. I think a lot of cash encourages foolish actions that act to consume the cash, happens with people too. The task does take persistence, an ability Jobs has not shown before. When he parachuted in there were so, many problems that he could go from a to b to c etc as he got bored and have a staff to do the dog work. Jobs knows his weaknesses and I think respects them and now will not take on a task that his flaws might not let him finish. this incicates some managerial maturity compared to his old days when nothing was too small to meddle with. There are many people who could run Apple, but many would not want it. It is an agonizingly long slow haul back from the 3+% share of boxes Apples has(based on topt tier and screwdrive shops, $ share somewhat higher(4-5%) due to the higher ASP of an Apple) They cannot afford another turkey like Scully. Amelio was too weak personality wise and was unable to shift and wanted a consensus so badly on decisions that he got frozen out. Finally he was forced out for his inactions as well as bad actions. The hard decisisons for Apple have been obvious for 5 years. I feel some of the tactics I have suggested would have been good for the job back 5 years. It may not be possible to get clones at all now due to lack of interst. Bill
