Actually, the Street is looking forward to the increasingly mature implementation of a clearly superior computing model. Look, there's no doubt that Microsoft approaches software development as though it were developing applications for a fancy pocket calculator with no regard for security, extensibility or reliability. They've been able to get away with that thus far because they achieved early dominance within that application space. They haven't scaled well either up or down and their lack of appreciation for secure, distributed computing, object-oriented software is quickly catching up with them.

Microsoft has never developed anything of consequence in terms of a core technology on it's own. They have doggedly struggled to bring their component architecture to relevancy with hack after hack after hack. It's horrible, it's taken hundreds of millions and more than a decade just to make it useful. It's their number one mistake and they will fall because of it. Needless to say I am talking about that pile of crap COM and DCOM to which we can add the latest hack-over COM+ when and if they can get it stable enough to release.

Scott (or is that Bill?), you are about to get a rude awakening from CORBA and Java and if you think it's been moving fast you had better look up the term exponential and brace yourself. We'll let the Bob Dole's and Robert Bork's of the world handle the legal aspects of this tragic stifling of technology brought upon us by these hacks, real technology will do the rest.
