re Sig, we should focus on the company's performance as a motivator for increases in the price of the stock; not mutual fund inflows. This seems to me to be a house of cards (or balloon that will pop).

LoD,

Nevertheless, the steady cash inflow to mutual funds is a dynamic of this market. These cash infusions have to find a home somewhere, and the managers are continually looking for the better values. I also believe that this greater amount of cash 'looking for a home' is a factor in the increase in average PE's across the board. (Obviously increased productivity due to technological innovation is a major factor) How else does one explain KO's PE?

What do you think will happen if the decision is made to invest our social security system funds in the stock market?

And you are correct: it may at some point resemble a balloon stretched too far. Still, as long as technology can deliver productivity and earnings growth which justify high PEs, I don't believe the danger is immediate.
