Bill, I don't know that Jobs wanted to keep the clonemakers operationsl at all. His take on the situation was that they were taking sales from Apple, so it wouldn't pay Apple to continue to let them sell competing products. The killing of the clone makers must have added to Apple's excellent sales results this quarter. People had been buying clones at the expense of buying Apple's computers. I know nothing about what Jobs was asking from the clonemakersp; perhaps others here know.
