Mark, DGIV's presence and all the others. Anyone in the IP telephony business will cause the telcos to shake in their boots. If you read the articles in CTI magazine(posted a URL before), they indicate how the long-distance telecom companies have a hefty battle ahead of them.
Everyone knowledgeable on this topic knows that IP telephony WILL and IS revolutionizing the long-distance market. (Cellular-satellite telephony will further bring down the telecos) Creating low rates will kill the big boys. One of their problems is that if/when they get involved, they will need to do something about all those telephone lines that will be used less and less(the write-off will be huge). They will compete just like anyone else, but the new technology will force them to figure out a way to keep maintaining the old millions of miles of copper without destroying the bottom line. The advantages of IP telephony on the cost structure will drive its implementation. Quality of sound only matters with spoiled customers like Americans.
