<<"Hill emphasized that Novellus is continuing its investments in new
product development during the equipment market slump. In fact, he
promised that Novellus would introduce advanced products to enable the
transition to dual damascene copper processing. Rumors at the Semicon
Europa conference in Geneva earlier this month indicated that Novellus
was planning to launch a product line for electroplating copper
interconnects on semiconductors. This approach would also be
complemented processing tools for deposition of low-k dielectric
insulators for next-generation interconnect, according to sources
at the European show.">>

At one point I thought NVLS might buy SMTL, but now I am not as sure.
I now fear CEO Thompson wants be the Copper King on his own. He may
be able to pull this off but he is going to face BIG competitors with
BIG money. This may not be David v. Goliath but then again it in fact
be that. I am holding firm...they have a good set of businesses outside
of copper and will perform well enough in the "up" cycle whenever that
should occur w/w/o the copper. Nonetheless, I hate to think that their
6-8 month coppper lead has been squandered due to management's lack
of foresight or SEA.

Just one man's spin....SemiBull
