IBM Global Services Rolls Out 3Com Standards-Based V.90
Internet Access - 11:16 a.m. Apr 21, 1998 Eastern

NEW YORK and SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 21,
1998--

IBM Sets Pace in Global Deployment of High-Speed Internet Access

3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) and IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced
that IBM Global Services has begun deploying V.90 standard 56Kbps(a) modem
service. Responding to customer demand for standards-based 56K access, IBM
has upgraded more than 400 network points of presence based on 3Com's Total
Control(TM) remote access concentrators to the V.90 standard via simple software
downloads.

The IBM implementation marks the first large-scale ISP deployment of the newly
determined International Telecommunications Union (ITU) V.90 standard for 56K
modem service.

"IBM was first to market with a major global deployment of 56 Kbps technology
and we are again first with a global roll out of 3Com software technology using the
new V.90 international modem standard," said Bruce R. Jackson, vice president,
global offering management, managed data network services for IBM Global
Services. "This deployment is further evidence of IBM's commitment to provide our
customers with easy, fast and reliable access to their e-business applications and to
connect to intranets, extranets or the Internet for the price of a local phone call
from almost anywhere they work or travel."

The 3Com Total Control platform, like all 3Com V.90 products, provides ISPs with
a universally interoperable system that is backward compatible, supporting V.90, x2
56K technology and all previous modulation standards. 3Com's extensive
experience in digital signal processing (DSP) technology provides ISPs with a
seamless software download capability. ISPs with 3Com platforms can transition
to the V.90 standard without replacing hardware and with little or no service
interruption, resulting in considerable cost savings.

"3Com is pleased to be the first to provide live end-to-end V.90 56K products to
both end users and their ISPs. We congratulate IBM for being at the forefront of
V.90 deployment and for consistently receiving the highest marks in customer
satisfaction," said Don Fotsch, vice president of product management for 3Com's
Personal Communications Division. "3Com's 56K products dramatically improve
our customers' ability to utilize the Web, whether they are downloading important
business information or enjoying the best experience the Internet has to offer."

"IBM's decision to upgrade to the ITU standard indicates the race to deploy V.90
56K service has begun," said Lisa Pelgrim, senior analyst at Dataquest. "3Com's
software upgradable architecture allows for swift deployment of standards-based
56K service. As major ISPs embrace V.90, vendors will see revitalized demand for
both client and server 56K products." About IBM

download speeds only and requires compatible modems at server sites. All V.90
and x2 products are capable of 56kbps downloads; however, due to FCC rules
which restrict power output of service providers' modems, current download speeds
are limited to 53 Kbps. Actual speeds may vary depending on line conditions.
Uploads travel at speeds up to 31.2 Kbps. Requires a V.90 or x2 modem, an analog
phone line compatible with 56K technology, and an Internet provider or corporate
host site with 56K technology. See www.3com.com/56k for details. For more
