NRID at Comdex. I visited the NRID booth at Comdex today. The booth was very nicely done. They had three computers set up for demos, one for each of the NRID employees present. As I approached the booth, all three NRID employees were busy with people and there were a number of people checking out the demos and information packets. I got a chance to chat with one of the NRID people for a few minutes and get a hands on demo of the product. They were demonstrating fingerprint, voice and (if I remember correctly) face recognition systems. I got the chance to try out the fingerprint system. For the fingerprint system, they had a keyboard which was extended (from the size of a normal keyboard) on the left side which held the fingerprint scanner. You press you index finger on the scanner and hold it there for two or three seconds. As your finger is scanned, it appears on the monitor. A small message box appears, you click "ok" and the software compares your fingerprint with the fingerprint database in the software. If it matches, you can continue. The software works on a Windows NT network with either Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation on the client. They are currently working on a package that can be used with Novell Netware networks. The software can also be used for password security on web sites. The price for the software package is just under $150.00 ($149.00 or $149.95, something like that) for each user license. I would estimate that the total cost per user would be approximately $175.00 to $500.00 depending on what type of hardware an organization would like to use. As a network administrator, I can say that one of the most common problems that I face every day involves something to do with a person's password. Using one of these systems eliminates these types of problems. This technology is a definite plus for anyone who works with network security. Greg
