Mark, I don't know if you were asking a rhetorical question or seeking an answer. In case it was the latter:

The demand for DSP's is growing faster than the demand in any other segment of the computer industry. Sales could reach $5 billion by 1999, with DSP's used in every modem connecting to the Internet through ADSL, most wireless phones, and as a companion to the main processor in almost every new Wintel computer. Internet ADSL alone has a potential for 1.6 billion devices. TI sales of DSP's could exceed 50% of its total revenue before 2000.

My understanding is that TI's DSP technology is open/proprietary, with potentially huge switching costs, two defining attributes of a gorilla.
