Honestly though, DELL would probably do just as well or better if the sold some
AMD based boxes. It's Dells production model that is so good. I'm not sure "Intel
Inside" is the "major" driving force behind DELLs success.

I think you are oversimplifying things. Dell's decision to use/not use K6 is not based soley on getting a better price on the chip or keeping Intel honest. You have to consider the entire value chain for Dell in delivering PCs to its customers (as you pointed out with Dell's production model) and what effect having AMD as a supplier would have on its value chain. Also, I do believe Dell has developed a "specialized" relationship with Intel and they do not want to mess with it by keeping Intel honest as you say. The Dell/Intel relationship is designed for long-term success, not short-term cost savings.
