re:Microsoft Windows '98: Extremely Worthless

My position is easy to defend. I am trying to get some discussion going about Windows '98. A little controversy helps to attract some interest. I surely wouldn't call the thread "Windows '98: Bill Gates gift to the world"--would you? I haven't been able to find anybody outside of the Microsoft PR machine who has a kind word to say about it. Except you. What's good about it? I fear it is going to screw up my Netscape Communicator.

What is undeniably stunning/sad is Office '97. Its amazing how many times they try to resell the same product to a public who does not want it. They extort money from everybody who must buy it to be able to communicate with other fools who use it. If Microsoft cared a whit about its users, these programs would be mostly forwards compatible. But then Bill wouldn't have a 35% profit margin after expenses and be the wealthiest miser on the planet. The only possible advantage to Office '98 is embedding web links in the document. So what! The amount of RAM required to run the bloatware is appalling.

Into this setting comes Windows '98. The MSFT PR machine is sensitive to its apparent lack of value, so they have overpromoted it as "extreme".

I haven't used it. I suspect I will try to avoid it as long as possible. I would be happy to have you or anybody else persuade me to use the product--is there any advantage besides making it easier to call Microsoft so you can get billed for their "help".

Best Regards,
Tom D
