Khris, this is an interesting quote about NCs.
: He also told me that the co. is not thinking that
: NC is going to amount to be anything.
: He pointed out that users are going to be severely
: disappointed in any such machines,
: and that NC machines would be a
: huge step backwards, and that all co.'s wanting to buy
: such machines would be served just as well by buying
: used 286's and 386's.
I'm glad somebody comes out and actually says the truth,
the the Intel/MS "plan to develop a design" for a NC is
a pure smoke screen. "Hopeware" does not compete with
hardware, they've played this game too much to fool anybody,
anymore. Even the PR guy from Intel sees through it.
Fact is, people use graphical detached terminals that
look the same as the display right next to the computer,
today. The big Achilles heel of the NC on an Intel is, that
windows NT is not multiuser, afaik, in the fundamental way that UNIX
is. What Intel is afraid of is the liberation of operating
systems and application programs from the underlying processor
type. I'm sure they believe java is a fad. Maybe so, but
they came up with ActiveX to counter.
The word from Intel this summer was, don't expect faster
than 28.8k soon, (subliminal message: but we have enhancements
in processor and disks that will make up for it). Now we
have 33.6k, 56k downstream coming, and ADSL/HDSL promise
much higher downstream speeds. So just be careful take it all
with a grain of salt, just 'cause their stock has risen doesn't
give them a crystal ball.
BTW, why is there no discussion of the price cut announcement?
They earlier suppsed they wouldn't be cutting prices, now they've
gone and done it, anyway. |
