Mohan... I suppose I am a professional historian, that is I've published books of history. I don't think that one can be a "professional historian" however. Really the passion for history is more of the wellspring of the amateur. I studied history at Santinikitan. My field was Indian history. SAt the end I think anyone who is interested in history is a historian; it is more difficult to get paid for it.

Mohan as to your ideas on coins.

Let me think how to get involed in this. Ok.

...I think you should concentrate on a particular period, say the coins of South India, 1400-1800. The fall of the Muslim kingdoms of the South should be your cut off. The fall of Seringapatnam.

Then, what you do Mohan is go to the British Museum and study their coins. Then, go to the museums in India and study their coins. Then, go to the dealers in India and start buying paying particular attention to condition.

What you need is to find a "mentor", someone who knows about coins of your period. This all sounds complicated but it really isn't. What is complicated is defining a period that you want to study... and then want to collect.

On another topic where do you think this market is headed Mohan? Your gut feeling? 10,000?? 8,000??

My best,
