CNET Beats Street Estimates

CNET Inc., San Francisco, reported a slightly narrower-than-expected loss for the first quarter. The Internet publisher posted a net loss of $5.7 million, or 38 cents a share, compared with a loss of $12.9 million, or 97 cents a share, in the year-ago period. The results beat analysts' consensus estimate of a loss of 41 cents a share. Revenue rose 69% to $10.7 million from $6.3 million. Revenue at CNET Online increased 76% to $8 million for the quarter vs. $4.5 million in the year-ago period. The company said the division had an operating loss of $664,000 in the quarter, but was profitable for the month of March. CNET said its television unit turned a slight operating profit in the first quarter on revenue of $1.8 million. Revenue at portal site Snap! Online revenue totaled $906,000 for the quarter, with an operating loss of $3.7 million. Total Snap expenses were $4.6 million for the quarter, equal to total Snap expenses for the fourth quarter. Separately, on Monday CNET and Bloomberg L.P. rolled out the first phase of News.com Investor, a new financial service for technology investors on CNET's tech news site.
