Can you help me understand the bidsize/asksize numbers presented on such services as THompson Real TIme quotes and elsewhere?

Do these refer to the number of actual bids and asks, or to the number of shares in the lots? How are these conventionally interpreted? If bid size is very high, does it indicate upward price movement? When they are about equal does it mean the price is stable for the time?
