<OFF TOPIC>

Sorry to steer minds away from the euphoria for a moment (we're on a slight intra-day decline anyway). I'm writing a lecture on the changing notion of god in 7th century Arabia, and need a comparison from the modern world.

Can anybody name a technological development that, when first introduced, merely fulfilled a well-established function, but that in the long run had radical implications ranging far beyond that initial well-established function.

The computer is one possibility; are there others?

I'm sorry for being vague; but if I could be more specific, I'd probably have thought of a good example on my own. Thanks
