Pat:
Being that phone companies and inter-intranets and virtual net companies functions are mixing, and that phone cos. stand to lose a great deal of traffic as the network model diverts traffic from the old phone switches, AT&T needs to incorporate the standards now evolving into their network. CSCO/CIEN are the cos. to contract with because AT&T has to deal with a lot of legacy equipment, whose bandwith can be maximized with Ciena's DWDM at little spending as possible. At the same time, CISCO's aggressive stand to satisfy customer present and future demand gives AT&T the right mix of the old and new with easier upgrades looking into the future.

Another point I am considering is AT&T and other phone cos. being hooked to the global satellite systems being deployed now. These systs. are not only going to deliver data/voice upstream-downtream, but also in broadcasting modes. The landscape is wide open as far as which companies will see it coming, while the fundamental model is already in place.
That is why I'm so interested in cos. like Ciena, Lucent, csco, wcom, ati, lor, iridf, tcoma, athm, cube, marc, veriphone, and many others whose name scape me now.
It's a great global revolution!

Have a good one.
