Sony/CNN Ink Development Deal

By Michael Grotticelli

Las Vegas--CNN announced a multi-year development deal with SonyElectronics that will see the ubiquitous cable news network bolster itsMPEG-2-based digital field news gathering arsenal (replacing its aginganalog gear) with a large purchase of Betacam SX equipment, valued at $15million.

As part of this on-going relationship--that actually extends back to thecable network's inception in 1980--CNN was also instrumental in workingwith Sony to develop the new DNW-A225 portable Betacam SX field editingsystem and has placed an initial order for six systems.

"This announcement is about a strategy built around MPEG," said ScottTeissler, chief technology officer for CNN. "We think it's a very flexible, very extensible way of encoding, moving and storing video which can applyfrom news gathering all the way to archiving. It can also expand the rangeof quality that's likely to be prevailing in the television business overthe next several years, from standard definition television to both speciesof HDTV. MPEG has flexibility over that entire range."
