APMT is one of a number of such GEO-based systems in the works. It is not new. There are many of these systems planned--even SatMex has or had a service called Movisat that provides rural telephony. Here are others:

Africom--A Lockheed system being built

ACeS

ACTEL--using AMSC sat for African telecom

ASC(Agrani)--pushed back to 2000 from 98 launch. Covers Asia, Middle East. India is initial market, and fixed trunking beetween major cities is an important part of the system.

EAST--Matra Marconi's effort in Europe, Middle East, Africa--hope for 40 cents/minute

Loral--SS/L has their sites on rural telephony as well, using SatMex, Orion, and Telstar sats, as part of the G* system

Satphone--another middle east/Africa effort

Thuraya--similar coverage to Agrani--May 2000 launch--50 cents/minute

Global Village Telecom--A Gilat related effort that supplies VSATs for telephony, but is not a sat operator.

From what I can tell, none of these is offering service at the pennies/minute rate that might be fatal to G*. At the prices proposed, G* is a better quality alternative. It appears that all this is happening because of the massive demand for telecom services and the lack of infrastructure. That is a positive.
