Motorola Introduces First 900MHz iDEN-Based System
Four Digital Subscriber Devices To Be Offered
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 1998--Motorola's Land Mobile Products Sector (LMPS) today introduced the industry's first 900MHz digital wireless communications system utilizing a variation of Motorola's successful iDEN(R) technology. The announcement was made at the International Wireless Communications Expo (IWCE) in Las Vegas.

The new 900MHz digital system will help network operators to offer superior capabilities, maximize the dispatch capacity of their 900MHz channels, and provide the reliability, clarity and security of digital communications to industrial and corporate mobile workers. The first 900MHz system is operational and being tested on several sites in the Las Vegas area. Commercial implementation of the system is planned for deployment early this summer.

The Las Vegas system initially will offer wide-area, two-way digital dispatch radio capabilities supporting rapid one-to-one and group communications.

''The use of iDEN technology in the 900MHz band has the ability to provide dispatch operators with a digital solution that offers the security and clarity of digital communication and can also offer a significant increase in capacity over traditional analog trunking,'' said Fred Wright, Motorola corporate vice president and general manager of the North American iDEN Infrastructure Division. ''With iDEN technology now operating in the 800MHz and 1.5GHz bands, the addition of 900MHz is the logical next step.''

Four new digital dispatch subscriber models will be offered through authorized Motorola dealers. All four models use iDEN technology to provide virtually crystal clear digital audio quality and convenient features. Group Call enables instant conferencing within predefined talkgroups, Private Call ensures one-to-one communications, and the Call Alert(TM) feature allows users to send a recurring tone page.

Two portable handheld models are being introduced. The DP900 basic model is offered with a basic keypad. The DP900 full-featured keypad model allows up to 30 talkgroups, 100 name/number Private Call directory and incoming Private Call ID display. Call waiting, speed dial, voice mail and last number redial are supported depending on system availability.

Two mobile radios also will be offered for in-vehicle use. The DM900 dispatch-only model is a dash-mounted digital radio offering basic dispatch features. The DM900 multi-service model is offered in a remote mount configuration with a backlit handset. Hands-free operation is enabled by a visor microphone for greater convenience. This model also is designed to support additional phone and messaging features subject to system availability.

Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of wireless communications, semiconductors, and advanced electronic systems and services. Major equipment businesses include two-way radio, cellular telephones, paging and data communications, personal communications, automotive, defense and space electronics and computers.
