I think the "trwice as fast" thing is misleading. What is twice as fast? Floating point operations? Integer math? Graphics?

Uh, system performance, dude. Check out the byte magazine performance measurements. It is in excess of twice as fast in floating point ops, and the system bus, as well as ram busses are faster. The cache technology in the powerPC helps it amazingly. Too much of the PC is still held back by 33mhz busses.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find an application that was twice as fast on a G3 than a equally priced PC.

No, I wouldn't. All of them. Spreadsheets, Photoshop, compilers, take your pick. I'm not kidding, the machines are twice as fast. Find an application where you can have it work for long enough to test and you will see the difference.
