Btw, Nancy repeatedly tried to get him to change his pro-life position to make him more popular. Imagine how the media would have responded to that "growth". He, quite rightly at that moment, perceived that he'd get more mileage out of a "right-to-life" stance. He was, contrary to what you'd like to think, trying for the support of the grass-roots Republican organizers. And they were people with a major agenda. He was happy to oblige 'em.
