NetWare supports databases just great. NetWare is Oracle's #1 platform in terms of units. Sybase supports NetWare just fine, too.

As for Paul's problem, he could use anything that suited him. It sounds like a fairly straightforward setup to me. If all of the depts have NetWare already, then IntranetWare is his best choice in terms of investment preservation. He can write applets easily that run on the server, and that bi-directionally interact with the web server, database server and the local security. The stuff works, albeit there is some BASIC programming required (same is true of NT-based solutions; C or PERL is the norm with UNIX).

I'm not a Novell sales guy, but a consultant who works with this stuff all the time, and coincendentally a NOVL stockholder.
