Actel Ships 14,000 Gate FPGA in New, Smaller Package; New Package Provides Simple Migration Path To Higher Gate Devices
SUNNYVALE, CALIF. (Nov. 4) BUSINESS WIRE -Nov. 4, 1996--Actel Corp. (NASDAQ:ACTL) today announced that it will immediately begin shipping its 14,000 gate A32140DX field programmable gate array (FPGA) in a 176-pin thin quad flat pack (TQ176) package.
The 32140DX is the fourth Actel pin-compatible device available in the TQ176 package. The other devices include the 4,000 gate A1240XL, the 6, 500 gate A3265DX, and the 8,000 gate A1280XL. By providing a selection of parts in the popular TQ176 package, Actel enables the designer to bypass the cost and time-to-market issues associated with migrating to larger gate devices.
The inherent flexibility of Actel's devices also solves other issues associated with device migration. Designers can fix the pin layout without detracting from the device's utilization or the performance, regardless of its gate count. The designer can easily migrate from a smaller gate device, like the A1280XL, to the higher gate A32140DX and finish the design with more gates, same pin layout, same package size, same predictability and same board design with no added cost or design time.
"By offering multiple parts in the same package we give designers a choice for easy migration to higher gate counts," said Ken O'Neill, 3200DX product line manager. About The 3200DX Family
Actel's 3200DX family is the industry's first to combine the register intensive datapath functions of FPGAs, the control and decode commonly implemented in complex programmable logic devices (CPLDs), and the fast dual-port SRAM typically used for high-speed buffering. Based on Actel's antifuse architecture, the family delivers unprecedented design flexibility and efficiency for designers using synthesis or schematic design entry.
The A32140DX device features fast, wide decode modules permitting easy implementation of high-speed state machines and address decoders typically implemented in CPLDs. Supported by a wide range of independent third-party design tools, the 14,000-gate device is optimized for synthesis design methodologies, yielding highly predictable performance for system logic integration.
The device supports on-chip performance up to 150 Megahertz (Mhz) and 35-bit decodes in 7.5 nanoseconds (ns). The device implements these decode modules without compromising the flexibility and predictability of the Actel FPGA architecture. It also offers IEEE standard 1149.1 JTAG boundary scan circuitry, which enables board-level testing during the manufacturing process. Price and Availability
Available now, the TQ176 version of the A32140DX sells for $99.90 in quantities of 5,000. The device is also available in volume quantities in 160-pin and 208-pin plastic quad flat pack (PQFP) packages for $95.20 and $98.50 respectively. About Actel
Actel is dedicated to providing the best programmable logic solutions, giving logic designers the capability and confidence to move to high complexity designs with success. The company is the world's leading supplier of antifuse-based field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and associated software development tools.
FPGAs are used by designers of communications, computer, medical, military/aerospace, industrial control, and other electronic systems to differentiate their products and get them to market faster. Actel introduced the first programmable systems-on-silicon, based on SRAM technology, which inaugurated a new class of PLDs: SPGAs or system programmable gate arrays.
