I would argue that back of the napkin calculations or even educated guess are meaningless since we do not have the true facts and assumptions necessary to make the calculations. It can be argued over and over, but management is in the best situation to gauge capacity and if they care to share it with us, is the best source of information, and ultimately the most credible. Analysts, not withstanding their pitfalls, are probably second best since they have access to upper management and can ask the questions directly, and ultimately have a duty to try and find the facts.
The companies are ultimately responsible for their statements, since if they make misleading comments, the shareholders have every right for retribution. People on these boards, no matter their scientific background, have no responsibility or creditability, and probably have 1/1 millionith of the information management has.
Looking at information with a healthy skepticism is smart, even questioning the companies information can be a learning experience, but altering the information to fit your desires or for the sake of an argument leads to bad decisions based on incorrect facts.
I, for one, will lean on management to provide capacity for each system, not someone posting on a message board. |
