Internet Spam/UCE Survey #1 User comments How do you feel about Spam and Unsolicited Commercial E-Mail, Darren & William???
E-mail "spam" should be treated the same as unsolicited fax advertising, and violators should be fined. I like it. Continue sending me e-mail bombs. And Clinton is doing a good job screwing his secretaries i don't mind being sent Spam-mails but i HATE all the porn ads in the non-adult newsgroups. Someone should deal with that!! hate it and think that "spammers" should be assasinated! I use the following "warning" urly-bird.com huh? I HATE IT Although I hate spam you do not give many middle of the road replies. Also, not much chance to clarify answers with 2 sentence restriction. Many real problems with spammers were not addressed here. I think that the Spam/UCE issue has to be addressed soon. The internet should be a free society within some boundaries. I believe that the public should request such advertisements not be subjected to them with prior authorization. I really hate the fake headers, too. Its superdy duper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lips and Snouts, MMMM tasty spammers suck. It's really getting out of hand. Newsgroups are so flooded with crap they are nearing uselessness... I hate spam and don't want to receive their junk. I fear the the commercial / adolesent agenda's of a few will bring unwanted goverment regulation. Spam unnecessarily slows down the internet. Forget criminal penalties...think death penalty. it rules I mail bomb spammers. If you send me threatening chain letters (bad luck, etc.), I will reply with 1000 copies for every copy I'm told to forward. NEBRASKA RULES CORNHUSKERS RULE I think spamming is a sure fire way to tick the public off. STOP SPAMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate UCE! IT DRIVES ME CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!! enjoy it, and if it gets in the way of other messages etc, just delet it straight away Can the Spam! SPAM is just like the meat. It is extremely frustrating and is apparent that something must be done. Though I would like to avoid government control, I would support measures that impose fines on spammers as well as allow spam recipients to collective actual and punitive damages relating to spam. UCE needs to be eliminated. It would be better if it could be done without government intervention. Someone goes to excess on some issue. It would be good if it could be limited to x monthly. Advertisements suck, but I don't mind some chain letters once in awhile. Spam has almost destroy UseNet groups and is crippling email systems throughout the country. Let's get a handle on it. Keep the damn government out of it Everyone has there own right to privacy and should be able to choose where the line is drawn, this is not the spammer's choice. It's a real pain but the truth is it works. There's no really good way of getting rid of it as long as people are making wads of money from it. I get so many commercial messages in my Email box now. I might get 20 letters in a day, and around half of them are junk. I would just like to keep government out of it at this point and see if we (the Internet community) can self-regulate. I believe in common courtesy and informal social control. Spammers ultimately risk earning the contempt of other e-mail users, and may find that their spam is counter-productive (gets the message out but to a hostile audience). I also think that users should have legal recourse against spammers who ignore requests to be removed from lists. The the mother %$@#ing %$@# is UCE??????????????????????????? Do companies really believe that harassing people via email gets new customers? It is even easier than trashing junk mail. when one provides one's email address, they open themselves to the possibiity of getting spam. I am sure it must get really annoying to some people, and i believe there should be a way for all people to stop it from coming in. User level email & newsgroup message filters need to be significantly enhanced in readers. Anyone who markets via SPAMmers or SPAMming techniques should be held criminally liable. Backbone providers should be allowed to charge SPAMmers for system resource usage. I hate Spam! It sucks! Support CAUCE! What about bill HR1748 (Smith bill)? Why isn't it on your survey Spam is the electronic equivilent of postal junk mail, so why go ballistic? Glance at the interesting stuff and throw away the rest. Newsgroups, however, are completely useless jammed with multiple copies of a dozen ads. Wish they could all be moderated to delete the commercial ads. If your careful, it's not much of a bother It may be annoying, but it should be left alone. It is a public place, and I don't want the government telling me if I can send spam/UCE or not. I hate spam & is costing me money to deal with it. If UCE mailers do not police themselves, then, eventually the government(s) will do it for them! ALTHOUGH I HAVE NEVER UTILIZED BULK EMAIL- I INTEND TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MOST COST/TIME EFFECTIVE WAY TO ADVERTISE- THE ONLY EMAIL I REALLY RESENT ARE THE FILTHY PORNO ONES- THAT I CANT GET RID OF SO I DELETE-WE GET JUNK MAIL IN OUR MAILBOXES(HOME)AND WE HAVE THE OPTION TO THROW IT OUT- SAME GOES FOR EMAIL-AOL SHOULD STOP BEING HIPPOCRATES AND ALLOW IT- MORE ANNOYING-THE ADS THAT POP UP WHEN YOU SIGN ON-I LIKE TO READ ADS AT MY OWN LEISURE.(SORRY ABOUT THE SPACE BUT I FEEL VERY STRONGLY ABOUT THIS OPIC) I believe in capital punishment for spamming newsgroups; UCE should only be punished with life imprisonment. As annoying as they are, they too are protected by the First Amendment. I am strongly opposed to government regulation, as once regulation begins, there is no turning back, and no stopping its progression into areas not initially intended or imagined. First of all, UCE and "Spam" are NOT synonymous and the terms should NOT be blended! I'm wagering that if ISP's were compensated for each email sent through their servers, there wouldn't very much support for "anti-spam" sentiment. they are free to do what they want. I hate spam on Usenet, but I don't see a way to regulate it out without doing more harm than good. I receive spam on a daily basis. It's annoying and I would like it to stop. The only spam that really bothers me is porn spam. The people who send it do not seem to care if they send the spam to a e-mail address that children use. Two years ago I could use my email address wherever I wanted to, today I want to remove it from whereever it is registered. I finally got rid of most of the Spam that was overtaking my email but the part that got to me was not amount, it was pornography. UCE is the rape of the Internet I will not lie down and take it IT DRIVES ME NUTS AND WASTES MY TIME! I don't like receiving unsolicited e-mail, but I don't think the government should become involved since this would just be another infringement on our rights. way overblown! I'm irritaed by banner ads, java, etc. But the price of freedom includes annoyances. It's a pain, but it's a by-product of the net. Certainly there shoul dbe no government involvement. Most of my e-mail is unsoicited advertisements and porno material. It is extremely annoying and time consuming! My experience has been more of a mere annoyance than hinderance. However, it slows down the net and renders newsgroups completely worthless. Net entities should always have the right to block UCE so that users can have a choice of commercial free links. The gov't only need get involved to the extent that it protects the right of service providers to determine the type of traffic they will support. UCE costs for the senders are only a fraction of what we pay for getting rid of it at our company. We can't shut down major backbones (but we are close to block AGIS entirely). to stop UCE will be a waste of time. Sometimes it's quite usefull. I wouldn't entirely want to ban or blacklist spam, but I do think it should be labelled as such. I would like to see a cessation to these money schemes and unsolicited porn spam. Those who say "Spam is free speech" also probably think someone standing outside their window at 3:00 AM with a megaphone yelling about their MAKE.MONEY.FAST scam is free speech, too. much adieu over nada Quit doing it to me, I'm liable to get really p****d off one day, and the one thing that annoys me more is government intervention (especially the US Government). The govt. should take no serious measures like jail time but online providers like AOL should 'blacklist' e-mail addresses that SPAM It is a violation of personal privacy. i think the entire UCE industry needs to be snubbed out, to stop all UNSOLICITED emails. obviously, spam bothers me more than it does most people, since most people haven't tried to do much about it, other than perhaps meekly deleting spam when they get it. It is terrible. It should be banned, or at the least, tightly regulated. Spam costs every Internet user money out of their pocket in higher net access fees due to their relentless hijacking and relaying off of innocent mail servers. Don't delete the spam; delete the Spammer! I think it needs to be handled and in a hurry. Spammers violate privacy. Nobody like it. They should only send junk to people who ask for info. It's an international issue becoming increasingly dangerous to spanners due to possible violation of local laws in countries that have extradition treaties with the US. I disagree with spams, but if we let governments take a role in banning it, it opens the door to other regulation of the Net! SPAM is a nuisance to those of us who don't want it. It is network abuse, stop it. Eventually due to blacklists hopefully no ISP will allow them to use their systems. biatches, i neva wanna hang wit' biatches. It's as intrusive as phone solicitation - I despise it in my home! I do spam/UCE complaints for an ISP, it's far worse than people know. It annoys me to no end, but i think people should have an opportunity to advertise their product online. But line tele-marketing, there needs to be rules for how it is done. Spam stinks! It is annoying and some what random but it should be brought under controle, not stoped, or at least single out the people who want it. UCE/Spam is a major and growing problem that should be stopped now! The 'opt-in' list is a great idea. By allowing spammers to remove the blinders and see that NO ONE wants to be spammed, we effectively end the problem w/o government's sure-to-be clumsy assistance. I'm a fairly patient, pacific person, but put a spammer in front of me and give me a baseball bat.... my wildest Christmas wish come true... I should have the option of not receiving junk mail. I would prefer that the government not get involved but know that the spammers probably will never monitor themselves. Junk mail has caused me to spend less time online and has made me hostile to doing business of any kind on the internet. Fines should be implemented in civil and criminal levels for spammers who send unsolicited e-mail. You should not have to post a "remove" from a list you did not directly or indirectly/unknowingly (Java scripts/rippers) subscribe to. Spammers will get theirs! Primarily, new security measures will allow spam to be stopped at the ISP level, eventually. Meanwhile, I filter my email & usnet groups. #1- government should mind their own business. I hate spam! Spammers should be put into jail. If they do not want any from mass emailers simply asking will usually get them removed, but otherwise most users are capable of screening mail from certain addresses. Maybe a list could be made of mass emailers and people could subscribe to the list to put them on their list of screened addresses. The two most annoying things on the net: spam in newsgroups, and spam in email. I hate spam! Spammers are losers, plain and simple. I don't like SPAM Personally I find it very annoying, but to tell you the truth I think they should focus on stopping the perverts that molest kids via the internet One account I use is AOL, and I know for a fact they sell our addresses. People even call via phone stateing they've recieved my number from AOL..... I THINK THAT SPAM IS VERY,VERY ANNOYING!!!!!!! E-mail is more private and personal than postal mail. All internet providers should block this type of mail unless the user specifically requests the mail. I dropped AOL because of excessive Spam mail. Also had a two year battle with "Granny's Deals" tying to get off their list. 'Spam' does not actually bother me in my email...but it does bother me that they 'spam' in the newsgroups. Most of the nesgroups I belong to are very crowded with postings and 'spam' takes away from the needed bandwidth. Demographers / Marketers have gone TOO FAR. Bulk mail, whether electronic or paper, should be limited to those who choose to receive it. All advertisers should be required to provide legitimate contact information, rather than false return addresses and relays, and should remove those who ask to be removed from their lists. UCE is no different than unsolicited FAXes and should be declared illegal. Spam isn't all that big of a deal. It's annoying and I would like it to go away, but I have bigger concerns than a couple of deletable messages. I treat unsolicited e-mail exactly like I treat unsolicited mail. I scan the message and decide if I want to save it. Whats the big DEAL? I think this issue is very important, because I deal with it every time I open up my e-mailbox See http//www.mids.org/press relating to SPAM and also articles printed in monthly newsletter relating to SPAM at mids.org & mn706 I don't think spam is a big issue in the UK at the moment. However, I think in time it will become HUGE. Spam is pollution & will drown legityimate Net use if left unchecked. I think it is a self-ish waste of the innocent user's time. I do not think the government should get involved with the Internet at all. MILD GUIDLINES MIGHT NOT BE A BAD THING, BUT REGULATIONS AND FINES CAN GET OUT OF HAND. Please let the internet, even its abuses, be left alone! We are truly free here. Let's not politicize this unique forum. My main concern is the e-mail that contains links to porn/adult sites on the Web. If I don't receive porn/adult information through "snail mail" why should I be subjected to this through e-mail? (Don't even get me started on childrens' access to this junk!) It's a pretty good idea; however, it's too damn hard to accomplish. We hate it so much we wrote a program called SpammerSlammer very new to the subject. Don't like it. Recently received spam that jammed my computer for days!! Spammers should be slowly toasted over the fires of hell. I feel that the majority of the Email Spammers out there now are Con Artists, Scam Artists, and Criminals, trying to Legalize their Criminal practices. UCE/Spam impedes communication on the internet, and will eventually make it useless at this rate. I don't mind it, sometimes i even like some of the information i get from a uce. I certaily don't want the government to regulate it. No comment. I regard UCE as being just like junk fax. I support the Smith amendment that would outlaw it as such. Something needs to be done without a doubt. I spend way too much time deleting and requesting removal than answering my legitimate messages. I wish there was a way to regulate Spammers while still upholding the first amendment. Start gov't regulation immediatly and make sure it's enforced. It is annoying. I get online to do specific things and dont like having my time wasted. I am concerned at the growing amount of Spam I am receiving. I would like for something to be done to make it easier to be exempt from this plague! Spammers are the scum of the Internet and should be thrown off it. don't care. spaming should be regulated at the goverment and civil court levels. sex very sex I don not think that the US or any other government law will work on the net. It is not called the World Wide Web for nothing. This is a problem that will have to be figured out. With all technology comes problems. spam is horribly rude and a bane on internet commerce. I support the smith bill. It is about as annoying as junk mail in the regular mail. It's free enterprise. Unfortunately Spam is here to stay. After all, in a market economy, the convenience of the seller (the spam-poster) overrides the convenience of the poor people have to endure what they don't want. I don't get that muck e-mail so I don't care It is an important issue that needs to be handled. Although spam is slightly annoying, it should be allowed to exist and should be protected under the 1st ammendment. An annoyance, but mostly the price we pay for the connection to each other. Not quite sure what should be done! Another way I deal with it is once in a while I'll stuff an envelope with my junk snailmail (avoiding my name, of course) and send it to the address in the spam. It probably doesn't generate as much business as it alienates and those who use it should consider that they lose more business in the long run I hate snail-mail "junk-mail", and I hate email "Junk mail" it all wastes time (mine) and my mailbox space...and clogs the net spam sux It should be allowed, but only properly labelled and if possible with a high fee (to make it comparable in cost to other distribution media). It is just another one of life's small annoyances. UCE is a major anoyance, and it hinders internet related work performance by hogging relays & servers. ISP's should work with their customers to stomp on spammers. IAmerica does not filter incoming e-mail since it's possible to accidentaly block legitimate mail that way, but they do strike hard against any fool who trys to use their (our) server to propogate their trash! should be regulated I think they should be limited to either those who asked for it or only send appropriate SPAM. The internet (usenet/newsgroups) are simply a form of communication like tv, radio and periodicals - all of which rely on advertisers. If you don't like it you don't have to read it and you can control it by deleting it. Simple. UCE/Spam, unlike junk snail mail, costs the Internet user money because we *pay* for our computers and Internet access. Commercial e-mail should only be sent to people who request it. I think that they;re annoying and should be stopped. I should have a right to be left alone. It's called privacy. I'm not really sure what you mean about it, but I have gotten a few "get rich quick" emails. I just delete them. IT IS ANOTHER FORM OF HARASSMENT. THEY SHOULD BE PUNISHED AS ANY OTHER PERSON WHO HARASSES OTHERS! UCE/Spam is evil and should be stamped out. Spam and UCE should be stopped completly and forever. Spam and UCE is nothing but bad news. I have nothing against UCE/spam as long as it is being use a limit, It's annoying, but if we want the net to be free, we have to tolerate it. It is the fakers (spammer using fake addresses) that are the problem. I am against PORNO SPAM and will fight hard against it. Incredibly annoying and getting worse. I hate all that junk. I have to delete 10 to 20 messages a day and Id like to be able to stop it. it is not relevant n my situation. there is no issue, leave it alone. Spam is annoying, but overregulation would be tyranny. Simple laws and user options should be enough. I don't think that spamming is such a bad thing, it's a free form of advertising for some....but I do hate the scamming that goes on from it too. Many people are being taken by the professional conartists out there, and if anyone should put a control on anything we should focus more on the legit and the non-legit ways of doing business... We all receive mail, and it's a free world, but it doesn't mean you have to buy or subscribe to anything, you don't like it you just throw it away right? What's the difference between the U.S. Postal Service and Internet E Mail?? The choice is yours! i think it STINKS!! I do not post on newsgroups and I keep my names off of mailing lists so I do not have many problems. Screw it all It does not really affect me sending unsolicited e-mail for x rated sites is despicable. replying "Remove" does not seem to work. - ganesh I think that on the ISP level, anyone that sends more than 2,000-5,000 email messages a month should be charged for each extra message they send. Then at least some of the cost of spam would be on the sender of that spam. The last thing the internet community needs is to be regulated by the US Government. I'll live with the Spam! UCD/Spam costs everyone money and time, and you should have some ability to recover your costs. PIsses me off.. too often, too much crap.. not much else to say. KILL 'EM ALL! Ok, actually, I support efforts such as the UDP -- actions by other USENET providers/admins/powers-that-be -- to chastise rogue sites. Not sure about UCE; inviting the government into the Internet does not appeal to me. I hate spam, but the government should stay the hell out of the Internet - It's a world community and an Internet authority should be assigned to represent all nations. I read what is of interest and delete the unwanted Like any other form of advertising, spam is esthetically distasteful, but should be protected speech. It must be eliminated. Unfortunately, many messages are "One time only" and replying is not effective. The list managers must take responsibilty, just like the Direct Marketing industry. ANNOYING!! let them do what ever, you don't have to read any thing you don't want too. it's like tv turn it off. it can get very annoying fuck you I am disgusted by offers such as get anyone's e-mail address, social security number, credit card numbers and checking account info all for $49.99. I usually send email back telling these people what they can do with their products, but they are always returned saying that there is no member with that name. These guys are wusses. They need to get lives instead of trying to ruin other people's. Letz hack and bomb 'em!!! Theyb should impose a site, just like they have for phone and mail, that if you put your email on the list, no on e should send you any. That way, all spammers would have to check the list to see if you wanted the email or not. Advertising, like 'junk mail in our postal mail box' should not be forbidden; however, porn, get-rich-quick schemes, quack medicine solicitations, etc., should not be sent to people who do not request them. More appropriate, I believe, is for people to ASK to be sent information from sites they have visited. Also, they should be allowed to indicate whether or not they would like similar information from other sites: not have their address passed or sold to other companies wanting to send UCE. One shoul be allowed to be taken off someones Spam list. I constantly see posts where on-liners tell others to NOT send back a notice stating "Remove" in the subject line, as all this does is 'verify' that you recieved their spam, so they do NOT remove you. I have also had most of my replies to remove me, returned to me stating "Unknown". Disturbing and dishonest. Now I just delete them and forget about it. When I have the option, I ask my ISP server to intervene and not to deliver emails from those individuals again. Should be treated similarly to unsolicited faxes. No UCE without a request or previous business relationship. Fines for violators. Usenet crossposters suck fat dick. The government sucks even fatter dick though, so fuck the U.S. government. I love the t-shirts. Spamming is a very bad way to do business. Those who spam will eventually get what's coming to them. Users should be able to make a choice. UCE/Spammers are scum. People said email would replace the postal system. Well, it is, and along with it comes the same JUNK mail we're trying to escape. I HATE Spam and I am sick of it! I think the US Govt. needs to regulate Spam from an 'opt in' approach - if you indicate that you want Spam, they can send it. All other Spam should be a criminally punishable offense! Nobody wants the government to control the internet, so if we let them step in now, wouldn't we just be opening the door to future restrictions and issues? Spam sucks, but i am against ANY regulation of the internet. It should be OUTLAWED. I hate getting them cuz they are a waste of my time!!! Put the trash in the RECYCLE BIN,not in my E-MAIL box!!! It hasn't really occured to me before. I am not usually bothered by it. S.771 is a start but the fine sounds too small, and what about foreign spammers? The main thing is fore the government to act soon to reduce spam, even if the solution turns out to be temporary. Spam is really irritating, because every day I get several silly Emails, advertising everything from 'FREE HOT SEX PICS' to 'MAIL 1000 PEOPLE, AT ONCE!!!'. It gets kinda old, really fast. The US government really can't control this since it is an international forum. It has to be done on another level. It deserves a workable solution. I detest spam and spammers BUT...I don't think the Government should be involved in regulating it or pretty soon they'll be regulating everything else on the Internet! Is that what we really want??? I don't think so! Let's stop the spam ourselves....It's OUR 'Net!!! IT IS A WASTE OF TIME, SPACE, ENERGY. IF SOMEONE WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT A COMPANY THERE ARE PLENTY OF RESOURCES ON THE WEB TO FIND IT!! I don't get a whole lot of junk email and the ones I get are small so I don't mind much. The newsgroups are flooded though. It is a part of life, like junk snailmail. Idiots and fools should not be on the Net. That means we would go back to the pre-early-90 Internet. SPAMinate!! I return severe messages to spammers and their ISPs and their upstream providers with a multitude of tools. I bet THEY don't like the unwanted replies!! :-) I would like to rip out the hearts of spammers and feed them to my Pit-Bull while they are still beating. It's annoying, sure, but it doesn't take too much effort to hit the Delete key, so let's keep the net how it started ... free from regulation! Although, UCE is easier to dispose of than paper junk mail, UCE recipients should be able to easily select which types of UCE they want to receive and by able to remove themselves easily by simply replying to the UCE with remove. Until this is done I will never purchase items advertised by UCE. I monitor all e-mail to protect the kids, but I strongly support free enterprise and free speech. The "delete" button isn't that far away. Advertising should not be done on any media your customer pays for! Government interdiction, given its 200 year track record, would only screw up an already miserable situation. It is a BIG problem now and growing. But one which I'm certain software entrepreneurs /ISPs/moderated newsgroups could resolve. I don't see it as a problem. I also think your survey is scewed towards anti-spammers because it doesn't give many options to those of us who are not bothered by commercial e-mail. I think it may ruin email funcionality in longer period as it does with newsgroups now. What ever happened to observing good netiquette???? I believe that it should be regulated to a certain point. I am not a fan of big goverment poking its nose into things. With the exception of the enviroment and work safety issues I saw an article inviting "friends of free bulk-mail" to take this survey so that "we can sway the results". The article specifically told the spammers to "leave a bulk-friendly comment" and gave suggested sentences. Strange... spammers will even spam a survey. Bring on the Smith Bill! Spam is just like the teleadvertiser who calls you at seven in the morning when you prefer to sleep in. It ought to be banned with appropriate fines. Consumers should not do business with companies that spam. GOVT.SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED!!!! Mass spamming is incredibly annoying, time-wasting and irresponsible. spam in email i don't mind, 'cause i can just delete it or filter it out. however spam in newsgroups is more difficult to do that to. i don't mind deleting 30 spam msgs a month in email but hate having to deal with 100+ spam msgs per DAY in news groups. I feel that while UCE/Spam is a real problem, it's not, and never should be, the next 'frontier' of government's over-legislation & over-regulation I think having to look at spammed messages to see if they are anything important is a pain in the butt I DO NOT LIKE GREEN EGGS AND SPAM, I DO NOT LIKE THEM, SAM I AM, DAMN SPAM, JUST LIKE ANNOYING TELEMARKETERS, BUT HEY, ITS A FREE WORLD! I am sick and tired of unsolicited, often offensive, e-mails cluttering up my mailbox. It is extremely annoying. I HATE spam, it's a waste of bandwidth, time & money. Most of the advertisers are in a different country. It seems impossible to get removed from huge lists like the IEMC. So far it hasn't affected me very much. Spam messages hurt the reliability and fun of newgroups by advertising things not related to the newgroups. It takes no time to delete messages or filter them out. It's not a big deal. Spam has destroyed usenet and should be controlled there first, since many newsgroups are now useless. |
