Charter plots new statellite paths in Latin America telecom market

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jennifer Darwin (Houston Business Journal)

After a total reorganization of the company, Houston-based Charter Communications International Inc. is racing to take advantage of deregulation in the telecommunications industry in Central and South America.

The company recently built three new satellite earth stations in Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. The satellite earth stations -- or teleports -- are facilities that can transmit voice and data between two places via satellite.

U.S. companies doing business in those countries are interested in using satellite communication because the development of traditional telephone lines lags behind current standards. Eighty percent of Charter's customers in Central and South America are U.S. companies.

Central and South American countries are looking to wireless communications to bring them up to date in technology. And they are deregulating the industry to attract foreign companies and speed up the development process. . .
