A news release from the Department Of Energy of America, Are you ready for this-

D.O.E. Eyes Near-Term Means To Reduce Climate Emissions

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--A wide-ranging portfolio of nearly 50 different energy
technologies is available to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by hundreds of millions of tons annually, the Department of Energy concludes in a new report.
'Technologies already being developed by industry and by national laboratories are key
to meeting President Clinton's challenge to reduce greenhouse gases while contributing to
economic growth,' said Energy Secretary Federico Pena.
'This report lays out what we need to do to bring our nation's best scientific and
engineering talent to bear on solving this problem,' Pena said. 'With the support of
American consumers and businesses, we can have a major impact on the kind of world we leave for future generations.'
The report, developed by DOE's 11 national laboratories, identifies near-term
practical technologies such as electric-hybrid vehicles, energy-efficient lighting and
windows, and passive solar heating and cooling of buildings.
These technologies should lead to longer-term technologies such as fuel cells,
microturbines, and biomass- and hydrogen-fueled energy systems, concluded the report,
'Technology Opportunities to Reduce U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions.'
The report calls for the federal government to lead a vigorous national effort to
develop these technologies and put them in place over the next 30 years to reduce the
threat of global climate change.
