They may be using Wintel sooner than you think. I'm in visual computing and there are some nice boards that are OpenGL compatible on Wintel that are good and cheap. Intergraph has an entire line. You can put together a full 3-channel system (ie. 3 windows on a graphics system) with up to 6 P6/200 processors for <$25K. SGI would charge >$60K. Thats very scary since I'm long SGI and porting code to Intergraph. Then there's 3DFX which is a $1,000 board that runs on Wintel. Good stats. The good news is that some of the new SGI stuff is much faster but Wintel is has got a solid foot in the door. Everything that runs on SGI (thats worth anything) is written in OpenGL. Not coincidently, OpenGL is part of the NT development kit. As I said in earlier posts, I'm hoping SGI makes a plunge into database servers which have many similar requirements as visual computing.
