tippet, the fed is not operating in a vacuum. If they tighten interest rates without any sign of real inflation on the horizon, they will have a lot of explaining to do. Right now they are keeping interest rates quite high in relation to inflation. I think they are achieving slow growth without inflation for quite a long period of time, and they probably think that the market will notice the slowing of profits growth soon enough. Once the market notice, it does not mean that a real bear market has to set in, it could just rise much slower with more intermittent declines like last October.
