Here's a bit of a party pooper:

Hewlett-Packard Said To Be Ready To Use
AMD's K6 Chip

By Mark Boslet

PALO ALTO (Dow Jones)--Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD)
appears to have won another key customer in its effort to wrestle a piece of
the chip market from Intel Corp. (INTC).

The Sunnyvale, Calif., microprocessor maker has reached an agreement to
sell its latest generation K6 chip to Hewlett-Packard Co. (HWP),
according to several industry sources.

Hewlett-Packard may use the chips in computers coming to the market in
June, analysts speculated. Further, Advanced Micro Devices may announce
the agreement, which could have been concluded as much as several weeks
ago, at the Hambrecht & Quist technology conference next week, some
industry sources suggested.

An Advanced Micro Devices spokesman declined comment on the
possible contract and a Hewlett-Packard spokesman couldn't be reached.

Also looking closely at the K6 is Gateway 2000 Inc. (GTW), these same
sources say.

Analysts said Hewlett-Packard's decision to use the K6 wouldn't come as a
complete surprise. The Palo Alto, Calif., computer maker has been
aggressive in cutting prices on its consumer and business machines and the
K6 comes with a lower price than comparable Intel chips.

Hewlett-Packard also sold computers using K6's predecessor, the K5.

For Advanced Micro Devices, the addition of another top computer maker
as a customer would be an important step. The company already sells its
K6 to top-tier makers Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) and International
Business Machines Corp. (IBM).

Gateway's decision, if it agrees to use the K6, would represent a more
significant change of strategy. Gateway presently sells only Intel-based
machines.
