I got the official word today. IBM has decided not to follow partner Cyrix and change the name of their 6x86MX processor to M II. In addition, they have decided that their PR300 will be a 225MHz (75/225) rather than a 233MHz (66/233) part.
This means that the same silicon will have identical PR ratings, but two different product names and two different internal frequencies. Isn't this fun? I think that it was inevitable for Cyrix and IBM to branch out own their own.
I've got some great news. In my left hand I hold an IBM 6x86MX PR300 (75/225) and in my right hand I hold a K6/300 (66/300). The IBM 6x86MX PR300 (75/225) also runs at 66/233 so I can tell you what to expect from a Cyrix M II PR300.
Who is faster - AMD, IBM, or Cyrix? The benchmarks are done and a champion has been crowned! Unfortunately, you are going to have to wait for the award ceremony. I am leaving to go to New York and Washington D.C. for business and I don't have enough time to write a respectable review. Sorry, but you are going to have to wait until I get back. Besides, don't you love suspense? I will have access to email while I am gone and I will be checking it periodically."
For some reason I thought PR300 would clock higher than 225 and 233 MHz? I guess PR333 will be 2.5 x 100 or ? Now we have the 6x86MX from IBM, M-II from NSM, K6, K6-3D, Winchip, Celeron and Pentium-II. Not to Mention the PentiumMMX. The more the merrier. Jim |
