JHR, there are few similarities between the economic conditions now and the 70's. Let me list just a few:

The US is not involved in a war.
The US budget is in balance.
We are close to full employment with no signs of inflation.
Long term interest rates are low with no indications of moving higher.
Productivity in US companies is rapidly improving.
Communism no longer appears to be a credible threat.

Nevertheless, it would be foolhardy to think that the business cycle is a thing of the past. On the other hand, I've held some stock for over thirty years -- like T and IBM -- and have done quite well on an annualized basis. You might want to check this out:
