- more light on the boneheaded earnings release
- such as did we or did we not beat earnings estimates (I think we did
not)

Shane and all,

It is not clear to me what the earnings estimates were estimating. I've never heard that consensus estimates reflect only the earnings before special charges (If this is true, then someone please correct me). In other words, the estimates should have reflected the acquisition costs. This could be one reason that Borland was hit so hard. Investors saw the 'consensus' estimate of 2 cents (subsequently revised to 4 cents) per share, then saw a loss reported of 27 cents per share. That would scare me too, had I not been aware of the pending charges.

IOW, is it at least partially the fault of the analyst who did not bother to revise his estimates to reflect the acquisition? This is not to let Del of the hook. I agree with posters that the paltry $46 million in revenue for the quarter was below expectations. I think that Del needs to explain to this thread and to the investing community more on where the revenue will come from in the future.

I think he also needs to explain separately Borland's old revenue and its future prospects, as well as Visigenic's new contribution and its future prospects.

SO DENISE, IF YOU ARE READING THIS THREAD NOW, PLEASE ASK DEL TO POST AN EXPLANATION.

Sam
