MRV Communications Inc. Announces Virtual Private Network and Voice Over IP
CHATSWORTH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 23, 1998--MRV Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:MRVC - news), a leading provider of high-speed optical networks, Thursday announced a new access solution for the enterprise edge and ISP customers.
The Xyplex EdgeBlaster is a network edge server that allows remote users to dial into corporate networks over secure Internet links, rather than more expensive telephone lines.
The EdgeBlaster uses virtual-private-network (VPN) technology to provide secure access to corporate networks through the Internet by utilizing hardware-based technology integrated with a feature-rich WAN router.
Generally, VPN devices from other vendors either provide software encryption or limited routing functionality. VPN technology offers encryption, authentication and integrity, using industry-standard protocols.
According to the company, VPN technology will also be integrated into its remote-office routers, the N3000 line. Incorporating VPN Internet technology in remote-office routers is significant, as economics will increasingly dictate the substitution of leased or dial-up phone lines with inexpensive Internet connectivity in the remote office.
The EdgeBlaster will enable the integration of voice over IP (VOIP) with the VPN data circuit, already established, thereby providing further savings and enhanced security.
According to Infonetics Research's User Plan for ''VPN Products and Services 1998,'' the remote-access-VPN market segment will explode over the next two years. Infonetics Research predicts by the year 2001, there will be 17.6 million remote-access VPN users worldwide.
Noam Lotan, president and chief executive officer, commented: ''The economics and convenience of using the Internet with the security of VPN are compelling reasons to deploy the EdgeBlaster. Tomorrow's networks will consist of fiber-optic cables transporting converged networks and using Internet technology. MRV Communications' leadership in high-speed optical networks integrates layer-one, layer-two and layer-three technologies to support the network of the future, today.''
The new EdgeBlaster features a high-performance, industry- standard encryption, combined with a full WAN router and the ability to transport voice traffic over IP. It can support up to 2,000 simultaneous connections, at a fraction of the price of similar devices offering a similar number of connections.
Pricing starts at $9,995 for a basic configuration including support for 2,000 users over T1 lines and ISDN.
MRV Communications is a leading provider of high-speed optical-networks, integrating switching, routing, remote access and fiber-optic-transmission systems that enhance the performance of existing telecommunications networks.
The company's advanced networking solutions enhance the functionality of LANs and WANs by reducing network congestion and providing cost-effective migration paths to next-generation technologies such as Gigabit Ethernet and remote access.
The company's fiber-optic-transmission products send voice, data and video under demanding environmental conditions to carriers, enterprise customers and residential networks.
